In Dr. Barney’s words,

Your comfort comes first. If a tooth must come out, our job is to keep you at ease and protect the area so it heals well.”

Dr. Barney

Our services include simple removals, surgical procedures, and wisdom teeth care, followed by clear aftercare for smooth healing. We always try to preserve natural teeth first. When removal is the healthiest choice, we make the experience as comfortable and predictable as possible.

You may be wondering:

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary in DeLand?

Tooth removal becomes necessary when a tooth is too damaged or diseased to be saved through restorative treatments. Common reasons include severe decay that has destroyed most of the tooth structure, advanced gum disease that has loosened teeth beyond repair, fractures extending below the gum line, overcrowding preventing proper alignment, and impacted wisdom teeth that cannot emerge properly.

Emergency extractions may be necessary for abscessed teeth that pose infection risks or trauma cases where teeth cannot be saved through other means.

Wisdom Teeth Removal: What to Expect

Wisdom teeth often require removal when they become impacted or crowd your existing smile. At DeLand Family Dental, we use cone-beam CT imaging to plan your procedure with three-dimensional precision, giving Dr. Barney a detailed view of root anatomy, bone structure, and proximity to nerves before a single instrument is used. Whether you need a simple extraction or surgical wisdom tooth removal, Dr. Barney and our team ensure a pressure-free experience.

Extraction Types and Complexity Guide

Extraction Type Complexity Level Procedure Time Recovery Period Typical Cost Range*
Simple Extraction Low 20-30 minutes 1-3 days $150-$300
Surgical Extraction Moderate-High 45-90 minutes 3-7 days $300-$600
Wisdom Teeth Removal Varies 30-60 minutes each 3-7 days $200-$500 per tooth
Emergency Extraction Varies 20-60 minutes 2-5 days $200-$500

*Please note that pricing varies based on numerous factors such as cash pay vs insurance, complexity of the procedure, and is subject to change. Please call us for the most current pricing.

Simple Tooth Removal Procedures

We perform simple removals for teeth that are visible and easy to reach.

Routine Simple Extractions

After gently loosening the tooth, we remove it with forceps under local anesthesia. Healing is usually faster than with surgical approaches. Most routine cases involve teeth affected by decay, gum disease, or minor injury. Appointments typically take 20 to 30 minutes, and many people return to normal activities within 1 to 2 days when they follow the aftercare plan.

Surgical Extraction Procedures

Complex Surgical Removals

When a tooth is not easily accessible, as is the case with molars, we use a small incision to reach it, sometimes removing a small amount of bone or sectioning the tooth into pieces for safe removal. Impacted teeth, roots left below the gum line, and teeth with curved or multiple roots often need this approach. Healing takes a bit longer than with simple removal, but it allows for complete and careful extraction.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Expertise

Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common oral surgery procedures performed to prevent or address problems caused by third molars. Most people lack adequate space for wisdom teeth, leading to impaction, crowding, or difficulty maintaining proper oral hygiene.

Dr. Barney evaluates wisdom tooth development during regular dental examinations and digital X-rays to determine the optimal timing for removal. Early removal often prevents complications and provides easier healing compared to waiting until problems develop.

Comprehensive Extraction Process

Pre-Extraction Consultation and Planning

We start with a complete exam and digital X-rays to evaluate the tooth and nearby tissues. For surgical cases and wisdom tooth removals, we use cone-beam CT imaging to get a three-dimensional view of root position, bone density, and surrounding structures so the plan is as precise as possible. Dr. Barney explains each step, reviews anesthesia choices, and walks you through aftercare so you know what to expect. Your medical history and medications are considered to support safe healing. When alternatives exist, we discuss them openly. If removal is the right choice, we plan it carefully.

Advanced Anesthesia and Comfort Options

Local anesthesia ensures complete comfort during tooth removal by numbing the tooth and surrounding tissues. Dr. Barney uses gentle injection techniques and may provide topical anesthesia to minimize discomfort from the injection itself.

For anxious patients or complex surgical procedures, sedation options, including nitrous oxide or oral sedation, can provide additional relaxation and comfort during treatment.

Precise Extraction Techniques

For a simple removal, we gently expand the socket and free the fibers around the tooth, then lift it out with controlled movements. For surgical cases, a small incision provides access, and we may smooth a small amount of bone or section the tooth to remove it safely.

Socket Care and Healing Preparation

After tooth removal, the extraction site is cleaned thoroughly to remove any debris or infected tissue. Gauze pressure controls bleeding while blood clot formation begins the natural healing process.

Surgical sites may require sutures to close incisions and promote proper healing. Dissolvable sutures eliminate the need for removal appointments in most cases.

Tooth Extraction Recovery and Pain Management

Effective Pain Control Strategy

Before the numbness fades, we review over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers with you.. Ice during the first 24 hours helps limit swelling. Most people notice mild to moderate soreness for 2 to 3 days, with the second day often the peak, followed by steady improvement.

Healing Timeline and Expectations

A protective clot forms within a few hours and starts the healing process. Soft tissue usually closes in 1 to 2 weeks, while bone fills in over 6 to 8 weeks. During the first week, avoid disturbing the area and keep the rest of your mouth clean with gentle care. Add foods and normal brushing near the site gradually as comfort allows.

Preventing Complications

Dry socket is the most common complication following tooth removal and occurs when the blood clot is lost prematurely, exposing the bone and causing severe pain. Following post-operative instructions carefully helps prevent this and other complications.

Avoiding smoking, drinking through straws, and vigorous rinsing during the first 24 hours significantly reduces the risk of dry socket and promotes proper healing.

Sedation Options for Patient Comfort

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide offers light, conscious sedation so you feel relaxed while staying awake and responsive. It is helpful for longer visits or for easing anxiety beyond local anesthesia. Effects wear off quickly for most people.

Oral Sedation Benefits

Oral medication can provide deeper relaxation for people with moderate to high anxiety or for complex treatment. You will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from the appointment because you cannot drive while the medicine is active.

Tooth Replacement Planning

Immediate Replacement Considerations

While tooth removal solves immediate problems such as pain or infection, replacing extracted teeth helps maintain proper bite function and prevents shifting of remaining teeth. Dr. Barney discusses replacement options during the consultation to plan comprehensive treatment.

Some replacement options require treatment planning prior to extraction to optimize healing and achieve the best possible final results. Socket preservation techniques may be recommended to maintain bone structure for future dental implant placement.

Replacement Options Available

Dental implants provide the most natural replacement for extracted teeth by replacing both the root and crown portions. This option maintains bone structure and provides superior function compared to removable alternatives.

Dental bridges can replace extracted teeth by connecting to adjacent healthy teeth, while partial dentures offer removable replacement options for multiple missing teeth.

Special Considerations and Safety

Medical Conditions and Medications

Certain medical conditions require special precautions during tooth removal procedures. Diabetes, heart conditions, blood-clotting disorders, and certain medications, such as blood thinners, may affect healing or require adjustments to treatment.

Dr. Barney coordinates with your physician when necessary to ensure safe procedures that consider your overall health and medical treatment requirements.

Age-Related Considerations

Children may need different techniques to protect developing teeth and jaws, especially for primary teeth that have not fallen out on their own or for teeth removed to support orthodontic care. Seniors may take medications or have conditions that affect healing, so we adjust treatment and follow up closely. Our family-focused practice is set up for both.

Prevention and Alternatives

Preventive Approach

The best way to avoid needing extractions is to maintain excellent oral hygiene and regular preventive dental care. Early detection and treatment of decay through routine visits often prevent damage from progressing to the point where extraction becomes necessary.

Professional cleanings and fluoride treatments help strengthen teeth against decay while regular examinations identify problems before they require tooth removal.

Treatment Alternatives

Before recommending extraction, Dr. Barney explores all possible alternatives, including root canal therapy for infected teeth, crown placement for extensively damaged teeth, and periodontal treatment for teeth loosened by gum disease.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tooth Extraction in DeLand

How much do tooth extractions cost?

Simple extractions typically cost $150 to $300*, while surgical procedures range from $300 to $600*, depending on complexity. Wisdom teeth removal costs vary from $200 to $500* per tooth based on impaction level. Costs vary based on materials, complexity, and insurance coverage. Dr. Barney provides detailed estimates and accepts major credit cards, CareCredit financing, and cash. We are in-network with Cigna, GEHA, and Aetna, and we’re happy to help with billing for all major insurance carriers to make treatment more affordable.

*Please note that pricing varies based on numerous factors such as cash pay vs insurance, complexity of the procedure, and is subject to change. Please call us for the most current pricing.

How painful are extractions?

With local anesthesia, you shouldn’t feel much, if any, pain during treatment. Most people have manageable soreness for 2 to 3 days that responds to recommended medication. Gentle technique helps limit discomfort after the visit.

How long does healing take?

Soft tissue usually heals in 1 to 2 weeks, and bone fills in over 6 to 8 weeks. Many people return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours with diet adjustments. Surgical procedures may take a bit longer.

What can I eat after extraction?

Choose soft foods for 24 to 48 hours, such as smoothies, yogurt, soup, and ice cream. Add semi-soft foods as you feel better. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy items that could irritate the area.

When should I be concerned after extraction?

Please contact us if pain does not respond to medication, if bleeding continues after 24 hours, if you notice fever or significant swelling, or if severe throbbing suggests a dry socket. Most sites heal well when instructions are followed.

The ladies at the desk were so welcoming and accommodating of my unique situation and were able to get me seen. My last dental office was requiring me to do annual X-rays even though I am pregnant and had X-rays done a year ago with them. I explained my dilemma and this office was able to work with me and my 1 year old X-rays to clean my teeth. The hygienist made me feel so welcomed and comfortable and reassured me of any teeth concerns I’ve had this pregnancy. The doctor had also reassured me and welcomed me in their office with no problems. This will now become my dentist office from here on out, I could not be any happier!

Wonderful, friendly and very accommodating. I drove 2hours and 30 minutes for my appointment and will do it again. My husband and I both had appointments today. I gave up my appointment so the dentist could work on my husband's 2 teeth that needed fixed. We were they for other reason and we were unaware he had a problem. He was able to save a crown. Thank you . July 8th out standing everyone is nice and I love his work. Worth the drive.
